Favorite First Lines/Openings | 5 to 1 Friday

Good evening everyone! I hope you’re doing well. Today I’m going to be talking about the 5 books with some of my favorite first lines. With an honorable mention for a movie that has a one of my favorite openings.

I hope you all enjoy and let’s get right into this.

If you don’t know what 5 to 1 Friday is, it’s a series I do on here where I talk about my top 5 of something. It’s not usually limited to books, but most of them will be for books. This week we’re talking about my favorite first line or openings.

Next week’s prompt is: Morally Grey Characters

If you want to join in either on your blog, YouTube, Instagram, or even Twitter, then feel free to! All I ask is for you to tag me so I can see your post!

To start, I want to honorably mention the wonderful movie How To Train Your Dragon. The opening scene of that movie is one that just makes me happy because of everything surrounding it. It’s used again at the end of the movie and if I remember correctly at the beginning of both the second and third movies. All under different context to fit what’s going on in the world at the time.

I just can’t help but to love it. I treated this as an honorable mention, because, well I wanted to include it but also wanted to include these 5 books. So I cheated and made it 6.

Kell wore a very peculiar coat.”

A Darker Shade of Magic, VE Schwab

This quote is one that has always stuck in my mind from my first reading of this book. Like my number 1 pick, it’s one that if someone said it, I’d be able to tell you the book it’s from and if someone asked what the first line of this book was, I could tell you. That’s not something that happens often.

This one and my first choice were two that I knew for a fact I needed to have on this list.

There’s just something about it that sticks out in my mind. I think it’s the mundaneness of the line itself, but the way that it fits into the story is just outlandish. It’s something that grabs your attention despite the fact that it’s just a passing sentence. Okay, he wears a peculiar coat. Why? What makes it peculiar? All these questions are asked from that one sentence which makes you want to keep reading.

Veronyka gathered the bones of the dead.”

Crown of Feathers, Nicki Pau Preto

This is another one that hits you immediately and you’re just wondering what’s going on. It dives right in and makes you want to know what’s going on. Why is she gathering bones? What in the world is going on? Gathering bones isn’t something someone would normally do so why is she?

Also, the name Veronyka is just so pretty. The sound of it and the way Nicki Pau Preto decided to spell it. It’s beautiful.

The demon exploded in a shower of ichor and guts.”

Clockwork Angel, Cassandra Clare

Yup, gonna get right down into the nitty gritty with this one. It’s a shock to your system. You don’t expect that when you’re starting out a book. You’re expecting something “normal.” You aren’t ready to be shoved right into the story where a demon is literally exploding.

I placed my thumb and forefinger on the icy flesh, spreading it taut above the breastbone as Uncle had showed me.”

Stalking Jack the Ripper, Kerri Maniscalco

This one has such a deeper meaning to me than just this line. This is the line that really kick started all of my life into where it is now. I don’t want to get into the details here or right now, but if you’d like to know exactly what this book means to me, let me know. I can do a “How I Got Back into Reading Post.” I’ve done it before, but I don’t think it’s up on either my YouTube or here anymore.

They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart.”

The Shadows Between Us, Tricia Levenseller

I don’t think anyone is surprised that this book is on here. I loved it and the first line literally gave me chills the first time I read it. As is common with authors, especially well known ones, Tricia Levenseller released the first few pages of this book when the cover was announced. So, of course, I read them.

Like I said, I literally got chills. I knew I’d love this book. You can check out my review here.

And that’s really it for this one! I’m sorry that this is going up so late. I hope you all enjoyed it either way.

Thanks so much for joining me and comment below with your favorite first lines or openings. I’ll see you all very soon! Have a wonderful night.
